Just the mention of the name Switzerland brings to mind images of luscious mountains, scenic ski slopes lavishly garnished with snow, watches, chocolates, beautiful architecture and forests. Indians had their first exposure to Switzerland through Bollywood movies of yore, and it has been on every person’s itinerary when they plan a visit to Europe. Since Switzerland is a small country, it is easy to visit many lovely places even in a short time. Here are some of the must-see spots:
Zurich:
Zurich is an international city with a breathtaking view of the snowcapped Alps. With over 50 museums and 100 art galleries, a pick of designer fashion labels and a glitzy night life, it is a place worth spending time in. Hike to the mountains or visit the riverside and lakeside areas, Zurich offers something for everyone.
Lucerne:
This picturesque town sits on Lake Lucerne in a picture perfect setting below the mighty Alps. The town is home to one of the oldest covered wooden bridges in Europe and lovely old houses and town squares all taking you back to olden day architecture. Lucerne is also your gateway to central parts of the country. Trek to the mountains and enjoy the great views around Lake Lucerne. Do not miss the cable car ride at Stanserhorn which is the world’s first open double decker cable car. Mt. Pilatus has an exhilarating world’s steepest cogwheel railway. It is also popular for its lovely souvenir and watch shops.
Interlaken:
Interlaken lies between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz in the shadow of three majestic mountains: the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Interlaken is a must see with amazing adventure activities to enthrall you replete as it is with mountain railways, ski activities, hiking trails, cable cars etc. You can enjoy paragliding at Beatenberg-Niederhorn during the warmer months.
Zermatt:
Zermatt lies in the foot of Matterhorn, which is among the most popular and beautiful mountains in the world. It is ideal for hiking and skiing. This is Europe’s highest and biggest summer skiing region. It is called Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. It has more than 200 miles of slopes. Zermatt’s has some of the best restaurants and hotels globally. The air is clean, crisp and invigorating. It is a car-free zone and offers some outstanding opportunities for excursions.
Grindelwald:
Grindelwald is surrounded by mighty mountains. It is among the most popular destinations for skiing and look out points. It has the largest ski resort in the Jungfrau region.
